Chuck Turner is expelled from the Boston City Council.

December 1, 2010

Fellow councilors vote to dismiss Turner by an 11 to 1 margin at a meeting in council chambers in City Hall. The first council member to be expelled in Boston history, Turner had recently been convicted of extortion and lying to federal investigators. Prior to the vote, Turner charged that he was prosecuted by the U.S. attorney’s office “because they saw the power of communities of color rising just like the Irish power rose.” The Supreme Judicial Court subsequently rules that Turner’s dismissal from the council was premature and should have been delayed until he is sentenced to serve three years in federal prison on January 25, 2011. He is released on July 18, 2013.
